LAWRENCE — After missing out on a state medal by just one spot last season, Humboldt senior Joe Kline came into his final cross country season with a clear goal of cracking the top-20 at state and earning a medal.
With about 100 meters to go and Kline in 22nd place, it appeared as though he would just miss a medal again, but then the senior turned it on.
“Thankfully, one of the other teams’ coaches, about 100 meters from the finish, told me that I was in 22nd, so I knew I needed to pass a few people if I wanted to medal,” Kline said.
Kline did just that and finished 19th with a 17:49.8.
“Last year, made me realize how hard I needed to work to get a medal,” Kline said. “This year, 19th feels a lot better than 21st.”
